Optimising processing and packaging with the uEye XC autofocus camera
High production standards are a priority from both a customer and a processing perspective. Imaging systems play an important role in this. The new uEye XC camera developed by IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH combines the ease of use of a webcam with the performance and reliability of an industrial camera. This versatile autofocus camera is specifically designed to meet the needs of the food and manufacturing industries in order to improve workflows and quality control. For example, it helps to detect objects on conveyor belts, barcodes on packages or labels.
The camera is available with a 13 MP onsemi senor and two different protocols: USB3 Vision, which makes the model programmable and customizable, and with UVC. This stands for USB Video Class and means that the camera requires only one cable connection for set-up and commissioning. It then delivers high-resolution, detailed images and video, making it an ideal option for applications that require quick setup and need to deal with varying object distances. Additional features such as digital zoom, auto white balance, and colour correction facilitate precise detail capture, crucial for quality control in food processing and packaging.
Like a webcam, but for industrial purposes
Unlike consumer webcams, the uEye XC autofocus camera is tailored to industrial requirements. Therefore, it uses components with long availability. This sets the camera apart from other webcams typically developed for the consumer market. The lightweight magnesium housing and compact dimensions of 32 x 61 x 19 mm (W x H x D) allow easy integration into image processing systems. The quick-change macro attachment lens enables users to shorten the minimum object distance, making the camera suitable for close-up applications.
Heiko Seitz, IDS Imaging Development Systems, explains: “With its features, the camera can shine wherever consumer webcams were previously used to produce perfect images at low cost and with little effort, but where industrial quality is still required. With its Full HD and 4K image formats, as well as the many automatic image enhancements, the image data is optimised for the human eye and not for machine image processing and evaluation. And its light weight and compact dimensions make it easy to use anywhere.” The company offers both camera models with USB3 Vision and UVC protocols, as well as convenient starter sets with many accessories.
